Michael Jackson es un artista sin precedentes. Su talento y carisma lo apuntalaron como el artista más premiado de todos los tiempos, haciéndose acreedor, entre ellos, a 15 Grammys, y a poseer el disco más vendido de la historia: Thriller (1982), con 65 millones de copias.

 

A pesar de que comenzó a forjar su carrera desde muy temprana edad, junto a sus hermanos, con The Jackson 5, siempre sobresalió entre ellos, lo cual lo llevó a obtener éxito internacional.

 

Aunque Michael era ya un artista bien posicionado en la música, fue hasta 1978, cuandolos ojos del mundo se centraron sobre él, gracias a su alianza con el afamado productor Quincy Jones, con quien realizara su disco Off The Wall (1979). El disco, que contenía composiciones de artistas como Paul MCartney o Stevie Wonder, revolucionó la industria, y comenzó a escribir una historia de altos y bajos para Jackson—con aciertos comerciales y dificultades personales.

 

A pesar de la evidente presión que el éxito de su primer placa solista tuvo, Michael dejó boquiabiertos a todos con su nuevo título, Thriller, que estuvo más de 80 semanas en las listas de ventas, con 7 sencillos en el Top 10. El disco,  adjunto a la incursión de Jackson en el ambiente de MTV, lo colocó, ahora sí entre los artistas más importantes—como lo bautizó Elizabeth Taylor: el Rey del Pop.

 

Las excentricidades de Michael, como su dieta vegetariana para obtener “cuerpo de bailarín”, según él mismo declaraba, lo llevaron a crear un mito alrededor de toda la fama con la que, de por sí, ya contaba. En 1986 se le diagnosticó vitíligo, razón por la que su piel comenzó a perder color, y poco a poco, abandonó la exposición al sol. De allí que en años posteriores saliera en varias ocasiones con el rostro cubierto.

 

A partir de allí, la vida social y la imagen pública fueron cayendo poco a poco. La popularidad de sus discos, si bien seguía dando sumas importantes, no alcanzó más la de otras épocas. Además, en 1993, fue acusado por primera vez de abuso de menores, lo que manchó su estrella, de allí en adelante.Aunque Michael negó rotundamente los hechos, no fue hasta después de su muerte, en 2009, que  Evan Chandler, supuesta víctima de Michael, negó la culpabilidad del artista. Según Chandler, todo fue para presionarlo económicamente y salir de la pobreza.

 

Ya en el presente siglo, después de una segunda acusación de abusos, las malas ventas de sus últimas placas discográficas y una lucha incesante por limpiar su nombre, Michael Jackson anunció la gira This Is It, con la que saldría de nuevo en 2009 y que, según él, lo devolvería al lugar que le correspondía.  No obstante, dicha gira nunca llegó a realizarse, debido a la repentina muerte que sufrió Jackson como resultado de una intoxicación por propofol, una sustancia suministrada por su mismo médico.

 

Así pues, como dice el proverbio, “murió el hombre pero no murió su nombre”—a pesar de su muerte, Jackson siguió estando entre las listas de los más vendidos, resurgiendo e inspirando a los artistas alrededor de todo el mundo.

 

A pesar de estar rodeado de la polémica, este hombre es un personaje de alto calibre, y nadie puede preciarse de no haber entonado alguna melodía suya, para bien o para mal. Probablemente, el constante escándalo que acompañaba a su vida, fue parte de la popularidad de Michael; un hombre por demás sensible y perturbado, indudablemente.

 

Así, cinco años después de la muerte de esta luminaria de la música contemporánea, el mundo recuerda a su aclamado Rey del Pop como lo que era, un hombre de contrastes: ya fuera a través de los escándalos en Neverland, de la demanda a Pepsi por provocarle quemaduras en uno de sus comerciales, o llevando esperanza a África con We Are The World, Jackson está a la altura de figuras como The Beatles o Maddonna. Se encuentra entre las vacas sagradas de la música, y no hay nadie que lo pueda bajar de su pedestal. Tampoco deberían intentarlo.
